We encounter this everyday. From the moment we wake up to the time that we go to sleep, we face stress. It’s simply a natural part of our hectic lives. Still, the question remains, is all stress bad?
Last week, I suggested a few productivity apps to support you on your quest to do it all. I sincerely hope you found something helpful in simplifying your life and on your journey to strengthen the Warrior in you! Today, I want to remind you that even though life can be stressful, stress is not necessarily always a bad thing. Wait, what?
I know, you are probably doubting the validity of that statement. You may be recalling numerous studies that show how stress can lead to all sorts of negative consequences from weight gain to general unhappiness to chronic disease (yikes!). And, you’d be right. But there is also a more positive and less talked about side to stress. Don’t believe me? Stick with me on this one, Warriors. It’ll be worth it. Knowledge and perspective change everything.
Starting with the Basics
So, what is stress anyway? Stress is your body’s response to external or internal stimuli.
External stimuli are things like that big project deadline coming up at work, your child’s crazy back to school schedule or your in-laws visiting for the weekend. In other words, these are all the situations, challenges and expectations we are confronted with on a daily basis in the office, at home or anywhere else we go.
Internal stimuli are feelings that come from within us. These are items like your emotional well-being, thoughts, attitudes and feelings of anger, fear or anxiety. No matter what the stressor may be, your body will have a positive or negative reaction. This is where the concept of good stress and bad stress comes in.
Good Stress vs. Bad Stress
Let’s talk good stress and bad stress. Bad stress is the kind of stress that happens too frequently, is too intense, or lasts too long. Our bodies weren’t built to handle constant stress. While too much stress is harmful, the right amount and kind (that’s good stress folks!) is extremely beneficial. Here’s why.
Stress keep us from feeling bored and unmotivated. In the right amounts, stress makes our lives more interesting and adds challenge and opportunity for growth to our lives. Basically, stress can help bolster us toward our goals. Stress helps you achieve greatness. That’s right, Warriors. Sometimes healthy stress is just the push we need to inspire the Warrior within to rise up and conquer.
What all of this Means for You
Look within yourself to identify the stress that motivates you to move forward (the good stuff) and the kind that paralyzes you (gotta go). Then, learn to manage it. If the pressure you feel before a big client meeting inspires you to go above and beyond to deliver results, remember that! Capture that. Alternatively, if a certain relationship or office dynamic is stressing you out and it’s affecting your performance negatively, work to get rid of it! Find ways to manage it that work for you. For me, a trip to the gym for a good sweat session or time with my son, Corey, are the best destressors.
Remember, Warriors are masters of their environments. They embrace challenge and become better. The next time you feel stressed, don’t sweat it. You’ve got this. In fact, you’re on your way to greatness.
Hugs and love,
